How are exams structured in the UK

Students applying for higher level courses are expected to have previously obtained 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, or an equivalent qualification. Some higher level courses require prior knowledge of the subject, e.g. Maths ‘A’ level

Our Admissions Policy

Choosing the right level of course for your child

We like to ensure that our students are only admitted to courses that are suitable for them.

Students applying for higher level courses are expected to have previously obtained 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, or an equivalent qualification. Some higher level courses require prior knowledge of the subject, e.g. Maths ‘A’ level.

Subject Combinations

We recommend that parents or guardians of students discuss carefully with a Student Adviser the number and combination of subjects their child may wish to study prior to enrolment. Some qualification subjects cannot be sat in combination. For example, the exam board stipulate that Combined Science GCSE and Physics GCSE are a forbidden combination .

Subject Content

Oxford Open Learning strives to ensure that none of its Key Stage 3 courses includes material that would be unsuitable for students aged 13. The majority of families studying with Oxford Home Schooling are completely happy with course content. However, if you feel that any aspect of our courses may conflict with your own personal, moral or religious beliefs please speak to a Student Adviser prior to starting the course.

Oxford Home Schooling reserves the right to decline any application to study without giving a reason.

Student Age

Oxford Home Schooling takes students from the age of 11 to study Key Stage 3 subjects, from age 13 to study GCSE subjects and from age 15 to study for ‘A’ level. If you are over 18, then we are happy to refer you our sister company, Oxford Open Learning, which specialises in teaching adults.

When arranging examinations, your contract for services is with the entering centre and all of your contact should be via them. If you need help and guidance, our knowledgeable team are always there but we do not have any say in how exam centres choose to work.

What are your responsibilities?

Students must be booked into a registered examination centre to take an exam. Oxford Home Schooling cannot do this for you. We will provide you with as much help and support as possible but it is your responsibility to find your own exam centre and enter with them. Your contract for examination services is with the examination centre and all of your contacts need to be via them.  The examination centre’s contract is with the examination board and if necessary it will contact the examination board on your behalf.

The only exceptions are subjects with an NEA or coursework (this would be A level English Language, English Literature or History and GCSE English) where the entering procedure is different and explained in full in our information on NEA.
