The Flexible Way To Learn

Why study Latin?

Latin is not only useful, it is also interesting!

It is the key to understanding many of the roots of the common sayings and phrases in our own language. How often have you seen or heard “Carpe diem” and wondered what it actually means?

Latin is an invaluable help when learning any of the “romance” languages; French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian as it is also the original basis of all five.

If you go on to further education, you will use it specifically and frequently in the terminology of Botany, Medicine and Law.

More than that, those who can read the Latin language are able to access the original source materials when studying the extraordinary life and wonders of the Roman world, most useful for studies related to History, Art, Archaeology and Literature. The study of Latin opens the door to the whole world of  European culture.

Course Outline

In choosing to study Latin you will discover the roots of culture and language which shape Europe even today.

For the language component of the course, you will study texts and stories in Latin to build knowledge and understanding of Latin vocabulary and grammar.  This constitutes 50% of the course and provides a solid grounding for study of classical Latin at advanced level.

For the Prose and Verse Literature component learners study Latin set texts, learning to answer questions in English on aspects of content and to respond to the ancient literature they have studied. The Prose and Literature element constitutes 25% of the final examination.

Finally, in the Literature and Culture component, learners study two topics on Roman civilisation and culture using the sources in a prescribed sources booklet in order to answer questions in English on aspects of the fascinating and enthralling civilisation of the Roman world. The Literature and Culture component constitutes the remaining 25% of the specification.

The 2026 course is split into 9 main modules as shown below.

  • Module 1: Amor – Conflicting Emotions
  • Module 2: Myths and Beliefs
  • Module 3: The Circus Maximus
  • Module 4: Amor – Otium
  • Module 5: The Theatre at Pompeii
  • Module 6: The Roman Gods
  • Module 7: Dinner Parties
  • Module 8: Life after Death
  • Module 9: Baucis et Philemon

As you work through the course you will submit 10 Tutor-Marked Assignments across 51 lessons. These are formative assessments so you and your tutor can gauge your progress.

Can I complete the exam in one year?

Our cut-off for enrolling on an A level Spanish course for the following summer examination series is mid-October each year. So yes you can.  However, remember that you will still need to fit around 700 hours of study time into your schedule before the examination.  The earlier you enrol, the less study you must do each week!

What is an International GCSE?

Our Latin course is for the GCSE examination only. We do not support International GCSE courses in Latin.

Is there an age limit?

There isn’t a specific agae limit for a GCSE course but we strongly recommend that the pupil is a minimum of 13 when they start the GCSE course and that they are academically capable of starting the course.  If the student is not 13 before they start, we may have difficulty allocating you a tutor.

When can I enrol?

You can enrol and start any time you like, the earlier the better. The important thing to think about is when you wish to sit your exam and to give yourself plenty of time to work through your materials and revise successfully. Our cut-off dates for enrolment can be found here.

Once you have enrolled, you will get access to your course online immediately and your printed course materials will arrive a few days later.

When will I sit my exam?

The Biology IGCSE papers are available in both the Summer or the Autumn examination series. The Summer series typically runs from mid-May to late June and the Autumn series is in November.

How and when do I book an exam?

The final date for booking summer exams with the exam board without incurring late entry fees is the 21st of February. You should book your place at an exam centre well in advance of this date. Start looking once the autumn term begins.

All the information you need to book an exam centre can be found in our Exams Hub. Here you will find

  • detailed instructions
  • entry codes needed to book exams
  • our map of examination centres where our students have taken exams in recent years.

Tutors & Exams offers discounts to Oxford Home Schooling students and has ten current exam venues across the UK: Birmingham, Bolton,  Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Romford, St Neots, Taunton and Wimbledon.

Pearson Edexcel also publishes a list of exam centres that accept private candidates. This won’t list every available centre, so if there’s nothing shown in your area, we recommend contacting local schools and colleges directly.

How much does a GCSE examination cost?

Your exam fees aren’t included in the course cost as they’re paid directly to the exam centre. They will vary depending on which centre you choose. Generally speaking, dedicated examination services will be more expensive than a local school or college. Prices range from £100 to £350 pounds.
